What was your first HR job?
I started my HR career at DHL’s Singapore country office in December 1980. In 1989, I was promoted to HR manager for the Singapore country office.
What are your key responsibilities with your position?
I review matters related to compensation and benefits and ensure these are in accordance with the company’s strategy for the employees, while considering current economic and financial situations internally and externally.
How different is your new role as compared to your previous position?
In my previous role as area HR manager for emerging markets in South Asia and Indochina, I was a HR generalist. I supported country managers in almost every aspect which involved employees – from compensation, staff development, disciplinary issues, recruitment to implementing regional HR strategy in countries.
Do you prefer being a HR specialist or generalist? Why?
I prefer being a generalist because I like the variety of the work and it gives me a broader knowledge of all HR functions within the organisation.
What do you think is the most important contribution HR can make to a business?
I believe working with line managers in every aspect of an employee’s development, from attracting and retaining motivated and capable employees, will sustain the success of the company.
Why a career in HR? If you weren’t in HR, what would you be doing?
I would be doing jobs that are connected with people, especially with children or youths, maybe teaching.
Which are your next holiday plans?
My family and I are planning to visit Tasmania, Australia at the end of this year and I’m very excited. It’s the first time we’ll be going there.
What song would you use to motivate your employees?
“We are the champions” by Queen. It’s a motivational and inspiring song that brings people together.
What do you do in your spare time?
I go for a 4 km run at least once a week. I also enjoy organising and preparing dinners on Sunday evenings for about 18 family members, and spending quality time with my family.
Best career advice?
Have the “can do” attitude – do what you have to do and do it well. Learn from mistakes and keep striving for excellence.
