Singapore – Even though the role of a manager has evolved and knowing how to manage global talent is now a necessity, the basics of good people management remain unchanged.

Gerard Muttukumaru, a leadership and change management consultant says, “To successfully manage people, make sure you are a people person, have a deep understanding of the business and know how to execute.”

Managers that are unable to get teams to collaborate are cause for a failed delegation. Muttukumaru says it usually means there is a breakdown in communication. Thus, he advises managers to make sure employees understand what is required of them and are empowered to carry out instructions.

Muttukumaru further underlines the importance of constant communication to prevent delays to projects. “If you are delegating to someone who doesn’t understand you, then nothing will be done.”

However the reality today is most people do not want managers – they want leaders, says Muttukumaru. “No one is going to tell you they want to be managed. They are going to say they want to be led by someone whom they respect.”

Thus, the mindset of the manager has to encompass to being a facilitator, a change agent and even a mentor to the employee. Muttukumaru says to be better and effective at managing people, managers have to constantly upgrade their skills.
