Bizarre HR: Toilet paper a prized commodity?

India - In order to cut costs, one IT firm in India has stopped supplying toilet paper in the male washrooms.

In a report by The Times of India, this is only one of the many measures that IT companies have taken in order to help relieve the impact of the US recession. Items such as stationery and canteen snacks have also been cut, on top of slashed salary increments and travel budgets.

"Tissue paper rolls have disappeared from most gents' toilets. Women colleagues say their toilets still have them, although the quality has dropped," said a tech professional working for an MNC. "The cuts are being implemented very subtly. Everybody wants to avoid panic and bad publicity," an administration manager of a domestic tech firm pointed out.

However some people have cast doubts over the effectiveness of cutting such small items. "We heard that an American airline has cut a celery leaf from every burger it serves on board. Are companies being penny wise and pound foolish, or will they actually save?" a senior manager of a BPO firm wondered.
