Communication can be especially challenging for those uninformed about cultural differences. When interacting with people from different cultures, it is natural to interpret their actions through your own cultural standards. However, doing so can sometimes be misinterpreted.

Being tasked with an Asia Pacific role has taught me some simple tips which have proven quite useful in interacting with staff from different cultures across the region effectively.

  • A simple nod of the head or smile may be interpreted as something you had not intended. Asians smile to show disagreement, confusion and sometimes even frustration. It is not always a sign of happiness or pleasure.

  • Eye contact varies around the world as well. If a staff member does not look you in the eye when speaking, do not take that as an insult. Many Asians avoid direct eye contact as a sign of respect.

  • Many Asian cultures have difficulty saying "no" to a request as some internationals may say "yes" when their answer is really "no". It is important to phrase the questions appropriately in order to get a positive response. For example, say "What can I do to make your job more interesting?" instead of asking "Do you like your job?"


Having respect for differences can go a long way in building a strong organisational culture.
