India - Customer focus has become an important driver of work engagement across most of the industry sectors in India.
Indian employees are more engaged in their work because they believe that firms can perform better if they focus on customer service and customer satisfaction. This would lead to employees having a sense of pride to work in their firms.
The level of engagement of the Indian workers is the highest in Asia with 78% as compared to Japan with the lowest level at 39%. The WorkAsia study by Watson Wyatt Worldwide stated that Indian employees are better at understanding the organisation's business goals, the steps required to achieve those goals and how their contributions drive goals.
Compensation and benefits also play a part in engagement in the workplace. An attractive "total rewards" package remains highly desirable to Indian employees implying that organisations need to come up with a competitive fair rewards package and should effectively communicate its value to the employees.
The third factor is performance. Indian workers appreciate an effective performance management system. The study revealed that it is vital to have a competitive compensation and benefits offering and to communicate the value of the offering respectively.
"Companies should communicate the value of their total rewards package, which includes not only work environment, culture, development opportunities and training," said Anita Belani, Human Capital Group, country head at Watson Wyatt India. "This expanded view helps companies differentiate themselves in locales where salaries are rising rapidly."
