CORPORATE BULLYING       ANGER MANAGEMENT

US - Bosses who lack a fitness routine in their lives are more likely to vent their frustrations at their employees.

The study by the Northern Illinois University, which polled 98 MBA students and their respective supervisors, found the more stressed out their bosses were, the more likely their employees were to say they felt like they were being victimised. Examples of abuse include bosses putting them down in public, or telling them their feelings were stupid.

"This is the first study to examine how exercise can buffer the relationship between supervisor stress and employee perceptions of abusive supervision," University of Northern Illinois researchers wrote in the study.

An article from The Telegraph noted only moderate levels of exercise were necessary to minimise abusive supervision. This could include just one or two days of exercise per week while the type of exercise appeared to make little difference to the results.

"It appears that the simple act of exercising minimises the negative effects of supervisor workplace stress on subordinates," James Burton, an associate professor for the university, said

The findings also added weight to previous research which showed employees generally bear the brunt of their supervisor's workplace stress.

HuffPost blogger and fitness expert Frank Sepe shared 10 tips to reduce stress in the office:

  • Meditate
  • Listening to music
  • Exercise
  • Writing things down to manage workload and stress
  • Stretching
  • Drinking less alcohol
  • Relaxing your muscles
  • Stop overeating
  • Getting a massage
  • Sleep
