RECRUITMENT AFFIRMATIVE ACTION
Singapore - Employers who hire, train and create suitable workplaces for people with disabilities (PWDs) in Singapore will be honoured for their efforts.
The inaugural Enabling Employers Awards (EEAs) is created by a network of employers who advocate employing PWDs and helping them use their full potential at the workplace.
Employers have commented that PWDs are more loyal and display better work performance in certain areas, compared to their able-bodied counterparts. Employing PWDs also bring new meaning to workplace diversity which has mostly focused on women and minority groups.
Shanta de Silva, chairman of the network, said, "More employers are becoming aware of the value of hiring PWDs based on merit, focusing on what they can do rather than on what they cannot."
Supported by the Singapore National Employers Federation, the winner of the EEAs will be revealed at a gala dinner graced by President SR Nathan which takes place next Thursday. There are two categories, namely the Leaders and Special Mention awards.
The first category recognises "one or two exceptional employers who have exhibited exhaustive, sustained and uncommon dedication to hiring PWDs".
The special mentions reward "employers who deserve mention for particular exemplary qualities in hiring PWDs". These awards are further broken down into three sub-categories:
- The Lifetime Employer award - for those who have made long-term commitments to include PWDs in their workforce;
- The Most Innovative Employer award - for those who have made efforts to innovate and redesign to boost PWDs' productivity;
- And the Notable New Employer award - for notable employers who started hiring PWDs in the past two years.
