FOXCONN RECRUITMENT
China - Hon Hai Group, parent company of scandal-hit electronic manufacturer Foxconn Technology, will hire 1.5 million workers for its Chinese factories over the next five years.
Terry Gou, chairman of the Taiwan-based company, announced yesterday the recruitment plan is in line with its intended business strategies for two Chinese provinces, reported Shanghai Daily. The company would be expanding its operations from Shenzhen to Henan and Sichuan, which are closer to most employees' homes, Gou said.
Although the recruitment news came after a total of 13 suicides had occurred at Foxconn in the first half of this year, Gou maintained the company was not making up for the tragedies. Gou attributed employees' personal problems as the main reason for the suicides. He also denied that the factories were sweatshops with harsh working environments as the media had widely reported. However, he did say he felt "guilty" about the suicide cases.
In order to prevent similar incidents, the company is now implementing workplace safety measures such as installing safety nets in case of suicide jumps, hiring counselors and increasing salaries by two-folds.
Louis Woo, special assistant to Gou, added that the company would be transferring two-thirds of its workers in Shenzhen to the proposed cities. It would raise the ratio of employees working in the Shenzhen plant to 66% against the total workforce as part of its business expansion. There are currently 920,000 employees working in Shenzhen.
