BIZARRE HR
Malaysia - Pre-marital sex is no laughing issue for the Muslim public servants in Malaysia because they will face severe consequences under the jurisdiction of the Islamic laws, following a new campaign.
Islamic officials in Malaysia have recently launched a Towards Zero Immoral Activities in Putrajaya 2010 campaign in efforts to eradicate immoral sexual activities in southern Kuala Lumpur. Che Mat Che Ali, head of the Federal Territories Islamic Affairs Department, has confirmed arrest reports of civil servants who were commanded to leave their government quarters, said a Herald Sun report.
"I can confirm that this is happening," said Che Mat of the immoral acts among government employees. He said some of them were caught red-handed in "khalwat", in which couples were in the midst of sexual intimacy.
While it might seem harsh, Che Mat said the campaign was necessary to put a stop to the complaints about the breaches of the Shariah law his division used to receive from the public. The government would also be intervening in the monitoring of immoral activities, even around the Putrajaya mosque. "We are not going to be lenient with [suspected offenders] anymore," Che Mat said.
Offenders could face fines and up to two years in prison under the Shariah law.
Muslims make up two-thirds of the country's 28 million people. They are subject to morality laws, such as forbidding them to drink alcohol in public, enforced by Islamic authorities. The country's Christian, Buddhist and Hindu communities are not subject to such laws.
