EMPLOYMENT AID IMPROVING ECONOMY
Singapore - There are fewer Singaporeans turning to Community Development Councils (CDCs) for employment and social aid as the improving economy creates more jobs in the country.
According to last quarter's figures released by the People's Association (PA), the number of new registers requesting for employment assistance fell by half from the first quarter's figures. PA noted that only 5,600 citizens signed up for aid at the five CDCs in the quarter, ending June. The figures have been declining from 2,000 new registers in April to 1,800 in June, reported Channel NewsAsia.
The CDCs also sent 1,100 jobseekers for training in Q2 this year, a 46% decrease from the same period last year. Zainudin Nordin, Mayor of Central Singapore District, said jobseekers should continue enhancing their employability through skills upgrading and training.
Similarly, PA has observed a declining trend in Singaporeans seeking social aid from the CDCs. The association reported a total of 10,400 people, a 21% drop from the corresponding period last year, have sought assistance.
Mayor of North West District, Teo Ho Pin, on the other hand, said the government should place its focus on those who have been chronically unemployed. They are facing issues "independent of the economic condition", he explained. Teo cited single parents with low educational levels, or parents supporting three children and above, as some of the more recurring cases, belonging to the lower income group.
