I would like to share a challenging task I accomplished, which I completed in a short time with limited manpower.
In June 2006, my department embarked on a global workforce project, which brought in S$2 million in HR investment. The mission was to build a skilled workforce to enhance the company’s positioning in the EPCM (engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance) service provider industry.
Following the success of the mission, a spin-off project was implemented and training centres were set up in China and India to train workers in the host country with no cost incurred to employees’ wages. After which the workers would be deployed to work in Singapore and other countries.
Upon completion of the training, the employees received a certification from Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education. Employers of the skilled craftsmen will also qualify for a levy which amounts to S$1 million in savings annually.
My role was to set up a training centre in China. I was given two months to complete the project, but in order to meet the launch date, which was unexpectedly brought forward, I had to complete the task sooner.
Although there was only one other team member helping me with the project, we accomplished our goal in 45 days.
To date, there are four such training centres in China and India with 600 employees. They are working in local and overseas branches of Rotary Group.
