FLEXI-WORK SOLUTIONS

Singapore - One fifth of Singaporeans still travel more than 90 minutes everyday for work even though there are flexible work programmes available.

According to a study by global workplace solutions provider Regus, the global average commuting time is 25 minutes. Currently, one in two employees in Singapore use public transport while half of commuters polled use private transport, usually motorised, reported The Business Times.

William Willems, vice president of Regus in Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia, said companies could help employees tackle the "damaging effects" of commuting on health and morale by allowing them to work closer to home. "Health conscious Singaporeans are keen to reap the benefits of remote working and flexi-time which can provide a much-needed break in the weekly commute routine," he said.

Flexible working practices could help employers save on office space and operating maintenance, Willems added.

Globally, 64% of 15,000 respondents pick cars as the most popular form of transport while 8% chose the subway trains and 7% preferred to walk to work. Only 4% take public buses to work while 2% would cycle or join a carpool. Also, 14 percent spend between 5-10% of their salary on transportation while 7% would use one-tenth or more of their pay.
