BIZARRE HR

UK – While UK companies are stricter about their employees’ punctuality in today’s tough financial times, employees are coming up with bizarre excuses for being late for work to avoid getting a dressing-down.

According to a study conducted on behalf of CareerBuilder UK with 100 UK employers, 15% of them said they would fire an employee for being late for work around two to three times. More (12%) than one in 10 would lay off an employee who was late for four to five times.

Tony Roy, managing director for CareerBuilder UK said, "Arriving late can impact perceptions of your professionalism and reliability not only in the eyes of your employer, but in the eyes of your co-workers who may have to pick up the slack."

Some unusual excuses employees give to preserve their jobs are:

  • There was a bank robbery
  • A delay caused by volcanic ash
  • Employee being overly concerned of an impending comet impact
  • A horse jumped over a hedge and landed on top of employee’s car
  • Cat stuck in the cat flap
  • A fire in the house
  • Employee's car was blocked in by a stolen car and the police were taking fingerprints.
  • Employee reported difficulty adjusting to the climate change from winter to summer.
  • The missing of teeth
  • An excuse that goes, “I always leave at the same time. Sometimes I'm late, sometimes I'm not. I can't figure it out.”
