TALENT     IT     COMMERCE

Singapore – Top talent in the IT and commerce sectors can look forward to a wider range of choices in jobs this year as organisations look to increase headcount for these business functions.

With the wide range of jobs available, today’s talent are seeking more information regarding the job scopes, workplace culture and career progression other than just the remuneration. According to the latest Robert Walters’ half-yearly survey, more critical roles are available in the Singapore’s IT industry this year, as compared to last year. Due to the technological acquisitions that have changed the market in 2009, organisations now look to hire only people with “strong transformation and transition skills”, according to the survey. Therefore IT talent who possess both business and IT skills have en edge over those who do not, and are more valued by employers.

IT professional are now required to be able to take charge of contracts and/or accounts on top of their IT knowledge. The job responsibilities encompass driving revenue, growth, pricing, billing, delivery and managed services. Potential candidates with the required skills searching for career opportunities in IT operations and business process re-engineering can expect annual salaries ranging from S$120,000 to S$160,000.

In the IT industry, talent with regional experience are required to fill critical roles in the Singapore headquarters of companies which have expanded their businesses in regional countries. Most IT vendors have set up shared service centres in countries with lower labour costs such as Malaysia and Thailand last year to allow them a competitive edge to handle business needs of their multi-national customers. Consequently, local talent with regional experience will be highly sought after by employers.

The demand for talent to possess the necessary skills to take up niche and specialised mid senior roles such as vice president of operations, facility manager, infrastructure and maintenance manager is also evident in the telecommunication service sector. Talent who are capable to assume those positions can expect an annual salary ranging between S$90,000 to S$180,000.

Similarly, in the FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) industry, there is a constant demand for talents with domain knowledge and experience in supply chain and manufacturing in pharmaceutical companies. Commerce talent can look forward to job opportunities including mid to senior level positions such as ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) consultants, project and programme managers with annual salaries ranging from S$100,000 to S$200,000.
