PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT     RETENTION

Singapore - Employees and jobseekers across Asia say having structured career reviews is the best retention tool a company can use to retain them.

In a recent survey of candidates in Singapore, China, Hong Kong and Japan by recruiting firm Hays, 57% said structured career reviews for promotions and salary increases is the best way retention strategy. Having additional benefits focused on career development is next on 36% of respondents' list. Only 7% felt it was important for the company to offer opportunities for travel and overseas training.

Career development is also the main consideration for 65% of jobseekers polled. Less than a fifth opted for a good company environment while only 15% would choose a new job based on the salary offer.

Matthew Dickason, business director of Hays Resource Management, said the findings have shown how important it is to have a "solid talent management programme" in place. Setting clear goals for career advancement and providing proper staff appraisals to discuss the individual's performance, development and the support required from the manager would keep employees motivated at work. "They become engaged and are far more likely to remain loyal," he said.

Likewise, providing training and development does not mean only formal courses, said Dickason. "One-on-one training and mentorships in the workplace can be just as effective. An employee could take on additional duties, such as chairing meetings."

Two in five respondents also felt a "winning" company that would attract them would have a good company's environment and public image. But 33% said it was career development opportunities while 21% said a profitable company would attract them to the job.
