RECRUITMENT
Philippines – A newly launched national standardized test will now allow BPO companies recruit faster and jobseekers easier access to open positions, according to GMA news.
The test, named BPAP (Business Processing Association of the Philippines) National Competency Test (BNCT), currently still an optional qualifying test, may be a move to establish national exams similar to GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) or NCEE (National College Entrance Examination) for BPOs.
In the future, this test may be a pre-requisite for all BPO company applicants, a BPAP official said.
BPAP chief executive officer Oscar Sañez described the test as a tool to enable them to create a larger pool of talent as they are currently “fishing in open water and it’s getting more difficult to make a catch." He also said that India, an outsourcing giant, has done the same thing.
By implementing the BNCT, there will be no need for first-level testing. Recruitment will become more cost-effective as the selection will be specifically targeted to those with the required ratings.
The BNCT will essentially measure a candidate’s basic skills, such as English proficiency, computer literacy, perceptual speed and accuracy, and learning ability, in which each competency will be graded, the BPAP reported.
On top of aiding the recruitment process, the BNCT aims to help school develop a curriculum particularly on “campus-based bridging programs," that is comparable with industry standards.
Chairman of the Canadian business group, Richard Mills, mentioned that “India has far more BPO workers than the Philippines,” pointing at the need to be more competitive in ways beyond providing large amounts of workers. However “on a per capita basis, Filipino workers earn three times as much as their Indian counterparts," he added.
