MINISTRY OF MANPOWER   DISMISSAL   DISPUTES

Singapore - The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) received 56 complaints against errant employers lodged by pregnant women last year. This the highest number of cases ever recorded.

This is an increase from the 26 complaints lodged in 2008 and the 16 cases in 2007. Twelve of last year's cases involved pregnant executives as well, said Minister Gan Kim Yong yesterday.

Gan said the increase in the number of complaints was due to various factors, such as a greater awareness of maternity protection, reported Today.

There were also 149 cases of unfair dismissal, up from 101 in 2009. While most cases were "amicably resolved", 3% of cases were found to be without just cause, resulting in the companies having to compensate the employee.
