LEADERSHIP   OLAM INTERNATIONAL

Singapore - Olam International has joined the ranks of IBM and Procter & Gamble by making the 2009 list of Global Top Companies for Leaders, which recognises companies for their excellent leadership practices. Olam is the first Singapore company to make the list since the study's inception in 2002.

The Global Top Companies for Leaders list is conducted by Hewitt Associates, The RBL Group and Fortune and is based on several criteria including strength of leadership practices and culture, examples of leader development on a global scale, impact of leadership to communities in which they operate, business performance, and company reputation.

Ranked 18th out of 25 companies, Olam stood out for its strong executive support for leadership development and its innovative use of experiential learning techniques. For instance, Olam works hard to provide its talent pool with "critical experiences" needed to accelerate their leadership effectiveness. Olam’s CEO, Sunny Verghese, was also noted for being a strong believer in leadership development, which has cascaded throughout the organisation.

Joydeep Bose, president & global head of human resources at Olam says the company encourages its managers to develop a sense of ownership and requries managers to shape the future of their business units.

Bose adds that Olam also supports managers and helps them enhance their capacity to engage and manage their people as well as focus them on building the next generation of leaders, while improving their own leadership proficiency.

The Singapore Prison Service was also awarded a Special Recognition Award for its  commitment and innovation to the leadership agenda.

The organisation underwent a marked transformation in recent years, moving beyond the role of a custodian, to a correctional system which provides opportunities for deserving and motivated inmates to reform and rehabilitate. This emphasis on "unlocking potential" applies not just to inmates but to its employees as well. Leaders are expected to aggressively identify and develop the next generation of leaders.

“Our leadership competency model, MV SUBLIME, is based on the principle that everyone is a leader. Each staff takes charge of his or her developmental journey to fulfil our collective aspiration in becoming Captains in the lives of offenders under our safe custody,” said Ng Joo Hee, director of Prisons.
