FLEXIBLE HOURS   WORK LIFE BALANCE    RETENTION    ADECCO

Singapore - With much emphasis being placed on talent retention today, companies in Singapore are taking steps to accommodate to the needs of working mothers.

According to Lynne Ng, regional director of Adecco SEA, flexibility in working hours is important to some employees as some mothers would clearly prefer working fewer hours to look after their children. She added that there is an increase in Singapore-based companies looking into how flexi-time work arrangement can work for their female employees.

Some larger companies even have small day care centres at their office location for the convenience of employees who have younger children. This allows them to bring their children to work and for the children to be in a cared for and engaging environment while their mother is at work nearby.

While Ng noted that she hasn't seen any discrimination against mothers in the workforce, she said, "What is important in the hiring process is that both the company and the prospective employee are totally open and honest about working arrangements."

Addeco Singapore's director of sales and business development Glennis Chan, who also happens to be a working mom, said flexible working hours is all about careful planning and knowing her limitations.

"With prioritising and planning I'm able to get a work-life balance," she said.
