CONTRACTS   RECRUITMENT   ROBERT WALTERS

Singapore - More Singaporeans today are more open to taking up contract jobs, said Andrea Ross, managing director of Robert Walters Singapore.

According to the Robert Walters Employee Insight Survey, 31% of Singaporean candidates chose "a premium salary" as the key motivator for taking on a contract role. A quarter of local professionals said they will consider contracting if there are a lack of permanent job options. In addition, 21% of Singapore respondents admitted they view contracting as an opportunity to get their foot into an industry or company that they really want to work for.

Other factors includes flexibility and exposure to different domain areas.

Most contractors in Singapore are currently working in the IT and technology sector (29%), followed by the banking sector (22%), and 11% in the sales, marketing and communications sector.

"We have seen a steady increase of non-IT contract roles becoming available across a multitude of industries and levels such as sourcing project managers, financial accountants, HR and marketing specialists, Ross said.

Companies usually hire contractors for several reasons. Whether it is to cover maternity leave or for short term projects. Companies also hire contractors as an alternative workforce solution due to restrictions in getting permanent headcount.

Furthermore, contracting can add great value to a contractor's CV as it helps to broaden their work experience, as well as build their skills, knowledge and expertise in various domain areas, as they are constantly being exposed to different organisations and functions.

"We do envision a steady increase of contract roles especially on the non-IT side well into 2010 due to a number of off-shoring projects, particularly within financial services," Ross added.

The survey polled over 3,200 professional candidates across Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China and Thailand.
