INTEGRATED RESORTS  TRAINING

Singapore - As the opening of the two integrated resorts (IR) in Singapore approaches, law enforcement officers are now going through training.

The Casino Regulatory Authority (CRA) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have made good progress in gearing up to deal with casino-related challenges, said Law Minister and Second Minister for Home Affairs K. Shanmugam on Wednesday.

Law enforcement officers have been serving attachments with police in Australia, Las Vegas, Macau and Malaysia for some experience in this new field. At the same time, international experts from several countries are in Singapore sharing their expertise at a training symposium for officers.

The CRA is also currently developing protocols to screen key casino employees, associates and junket operators, says Channel NewsAsia.

"The IRs pose a paradigm challenge because we have been very good with dealing with MNCs, banks, people who obey the law. We regulate fairly effectively in the financial services sector," says Shanmugam. "But when it comes to casinos, I think by definition, you bring a whole variety of related problems which are inherent and part of the operations."
