Networking as a lifelong tool

COMMUNICATION  JOB SEARCH  NETWORKING

Singapore - Networking is a lifelong tool that can help bring about opportunities for a jobseeker, says Paul Heng, founder, managing director and executive coach of NeXT Corporate Coaching Services.

With more job seekers landing jobs through networking and personal referrals compared to other job search avenues, networking gives a jobseeker access to the "hidden" job market and gives them acquired information about potential job openings and job search-related information.

Heng explains that networking connects you to a party and makes you a "known entity". With that, some credibility is established upfront, making it more possible for you to receive a positive response from a potential employer.

Even when you are not actively seeking a job, Heng feels networking is a necessity. Networking is a lifelong activity to acquire, nurture and grow a network of contacts, allowing the jobseeker to receive help from others and reciprocate in return. In fact, he believes that networking should be started as early as time spent in university.

While networking involves a personal set of communication skills which can be acquired through experience, Heng says that one thing to steer clear of is taking too much help and not giving any in return. Also, using networking for monetary gain is another mistake jobseekers should avoid.

However, Heng believes that networking is ultimately about having a genuine interest in people. "To succeed in networking - you have to develop an interest in wanting to get to know people, for who they are, not what job title is says on their business card."
