MCDONALD'S HR  AUSTRALIA HR  RECRUITMENT

Australia - Graduates, ex-bankers and former teachers are now headed to McDonald's hoping to find a job there behind the counters.

According to The Herald Sun, with Australia's unemployment rate at 5.7%, many professionals in the badly affected industries such as banking and teaching,  as well as new graduates, are now applying for jobs at all levels of McDonald's.

McDonald's National People Resources manager, John Whitehouse, said the number of graduates entering the chain's management program had increased by almost 50% over the past year. "The two areas I've noticed an increase in are university students applying for management jobs and mature-aged people," he said.

Whitehouse added that people in McDonald's usually work their way up the management chain to head office, and approximately 80% of the staff had begun their careers behind restaurant counters.

More than 400 people in the state of Victoria apply daily and about 80 to 90 people are hired daily.

McDonald's is not the only employer that has seen an increase in the number of applications. The Herald Sun reported that mainstream retailers such as supermarkets have also seen an increase in the number of  job applications as well.
