Now in its seventh year, "End Hunger: Walk the World" will see people walking for hunger in 70 countries, beginning in Sydney and continuing all 24 time zones. In Singapore, employees of TNT, Unilever, Credit Suisse and G3 Worldwide will walk along part of the race track of the F1 Singapore Grand Prix with friends and family, celebrities and WFP employees.
Walk the World began in Singapore in 2003 as an internal fund-raising event at TNT, where its employees walked to raise awareness and funds to support the WFP's School Feeding Programme. Originally a simple "employee engagement day", it has now become one of the largest awareness and fundraising programmes in the world.
Josette Sheeran, executive director of WFP, says Walk the World comes at a time of unprecedented challenges for the hungry and poor. "Children are suffering because food prices are still high in many developing countries, and the global financial crisis is now hitting family incomes hard."
It costs WFP 20 Euro cents (S$0.40) to provide a proper meal to a child, while school feeding programmes also give parents the extra incentive to keep their children in school to lay a healthy foundation for a better future for the young.
