Malaysia to raise salaries of civil servants from Dec 2024

The wage boost represents an increase of more than 13%, with a budget exceeding RM10bn allocated for implementation.

Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim has announced an increase in salaries for civil servants, to ensure that the minimum income of civil servants exceeds RM2,000 per month.

The wage boost represents an increase of more than 13%, with a budget exceeding RM10bn allocated for implementation starting December 2024.

Speaking at the Labour Day Celebrations 2024 on Wednesday (1 May), PM Anwar also announced other key matters that have been "awaited for a long time and need to be addressed in order to defend the welfare of the people when dealing with the current global economic situation".

Particularly, the governments of Sabah and Sarawak have agreed to amend the Labour Ordinance of Sabah (Ordinance Cap. 67) and Sarawak (Ordinance Chapter 76) to align with the Labour Act 1955 (or Employment Act 1955), which applies in Peninsular Malaysia.

The Sabah Labour Ordinance Bill (Amendment) 2024 and the Sarawak Labour Ordinance Bill are expected to be presented in the next Parliament session.

"I also urge [those in] the private sector, recording high profits, to provide equal treatment to workers by offering better wage rates.

"Therefore, it is our collective responsibility, whether as an association or a colleague in the department, to ensure the togetherness of all parties in raising the quality and service to the people and the country at an even better level."
